Finding and holding on to top talent can make all the difference in a small company, and retaining top talent isn’t always easy. But, it’s worth it. Laszlo Bock, Senior Vice-President of Google’s People Operations, noted on an episode of NPR’s “Hidden Brain” podcast that, “the top 1% of workers generated 10 times the average output, and the top 5% more than four times the average.” How do you keep top talent at your business, though? Here are a few tips that might help.
Make Them Feel Like an Asset
Everyone likes to feel like part of the team and know the work they’re doing is contributing to something. Employers can help foster those feelings through interaction and constructive feedback. Recognizing good work goes a long way to making your employees feel appreciated and respected.
Set Clear Expectations and Goals
No one enjoys feeling like they’re lost in their job. Having a clear job description and a proven method for making changes to that description are vital to keeping everyone on the same page. Goals help motivate people to work harder, but when they don’t have a say in the goal it can feel completely unattainable. Make sure the employee helps to set the goals. Make them achievable. Employers want to challenge employees to do their best work, but need to know when their expectations are too high.
Open and Honest Work Environment
Let’s say, for example, an employer sets a quarterly goal for a department without any input. Employees can feel frustrated or overwhelmed, both killers of productivity. In an open and honest work environment employees should feel comfortable enough to discuss goals with their employers and work together to set goals that are challenging and attainable.
