Every employee wants recognition once in a while for doing a great job, and receiving praise can actually make a considerable change in productivity and morale in the office. A study found that when groups were given recognition– such as a nice message from their boss, or a reward- such as pizza for lunch, they performed better than groups who received nothing. Giving employees the recognition they deserve isn’t always easy, so here are some tips on how to reward your workers the right way.
Too Many Incentives Are A Bad Thing
While you may want to incentivize your employees to be productive by offering them free items, the more things you give away, the more negative the reaction. Incentives only work as a short-term productivity boost, then result in long-term dips in efficiency. This is because people get used to the incentive system quickly and the “bonus” feeling wears off, and they don’t want to feel as though they are only working hard to receive a free item.
Keep It Simple
When it comes to giving your employees special recognition, keep it as simple as possible. Don’t come up with an elaborate point system that makes it hard for workers to keep track of their points, as that will only cause confusion and frustration- the opposite of what you are trying to achieve. A simple recognition such as a thoughtful email or meeting to thank your team goes a long way, and your employees will appreciate the simple act.
Make It Specific
While there’s nothing wrong with telling an employee “Good job,” it often feels ingenuine. To show your workers that you notice their hard work, tell them more specific statements when they go above and beyond. Your employees work hard every day, and while constant approval isn’t necessary, everyone enjoys being told they did a great job on something they worked really hard on. When recognizing an employee for the great work they’ve done, be specific and state what you noticed them do or how they handled a certain situation, and tell them you appreciate their efforts. The extra step of including their tasks makes the recognition feel more genuine and rewarding.
