Learn about the three main components of talent management strategy.

Talent management involves finding, hiring and retaining talented employees. This is not an easy process, as business leaders want the most engaged, qualified, and high-performing employees to maintain a successful company. A great workplace will align talent management with company strategy and have consistent leadership criteria for all areas of the business. Here are three things about all employees that you must keep in mind when hiring new talent.

Strengths and Weaknesses

While going through the interview process, it is crucial to have a firm understanding of a potential employee’s strengths and weaknesses. For example, if you are looking to hire someone to think outside of the box with creative problem solving, you don’t want to hire a person with little imagination. Everyone has a distinct personality, and most traits and natural strengths cannot be easily changed. Even though you may like a potential employee and they have the right experience, their natural strengths must match up with their responsibilities, or they will not succeed in the position.

Former Work Experience

A person’s former work experiences often carry with them to a new workplace. When interviewing someone, it’s important to have an understanding of their previous work experiences and how that impacts their decision making. For example, if a person was given opportunities that allowed them to succeed and use their natural strengths, they are likely to have a positive work ethic and desire to do well at a new job. However, if a person wasn’t treated well at their former position and was not given many opportunities to grow and succeed, they may be more skeptical and guarded.

The Right Environment

Once you’ve found the right employee with natural strengths that fit the job position and are aware of their past, find the best environment for them to shine. You must put a new employee in an environment where they are naturally motivated to ensure they are engaged with your company. To do this, business leaders must take the time to find the best setting that utilizes an employee’s strengths for a common purpose. An employee may look great on paper, but when put in the wrong environment that doesn’t allow them to use their natural strengths and skills, they will not be able to succeed.
